Caustic wheat is wheat treated with caustic soda. The sodium hydroxide coating acts as an alkaili to the acids produced in the rumen, therefore helping to promote stable rumen conditions, which is essential for efficient feed utilisation, reducing the risks associated with feeding high levels of rolled cereals or acid silages. The reduction in acid loading in the rumen in turn leads to increased milk yield and quality in dairy cows and increased live weight gain and feed conversion in beef cattle.
Caustic wheat is a moist feed with a high starch content of which 70% is rumen unfermented, providing a high amount of bypass starch.
